Tough Questions for Christians #9: Pleasurable Sin

You know, I’ve never tasted cat feces. Never. I have no idea what it tastes like. I can tell you it smells bad. I’ve never tasted dog feces either, or gerbil feces, or really any sort of fecal matter at all. To my knowledge, I’ve never actually ingested it.

I’ve also never slammed my finger in the door intentionally. Never stabbed myself, never intentionally broken a bone. Never grabbed a finger and just snapped it back.

I’ve never done any of those things.

I have the ability to do them, I have the free-will to do them if I choose. But I choose not to. They’re not appealing in any sort of way.

Unfortunately, sin is not the same.

If God were to have made sin as distasteful, or as unpleasant as stabbing yourself, slamming your fingers in a door, or eating cat feces, then the entire world would be (for the most part) saved, and completely sinless. People wouldn’t commit sin because it would be completely appalling.

But that’s not the way sin is, is it? In most cases, sin extremely pleasurable. In fact, God went to such extremes as to put massive amounts of nerve endings on the reproductive organs and then penalize people for using them.

Having sex in any way for anything other procreation is sinful and abhorrent. You can’t do it, you shouldn’t do it, it’s bad. No really, if God wanted to make it so people only had sex when they wanted to have children, he could’ve just left the nerve endings off. It would’ve been an action like arm wrestling, that people could do when they wanted, but they’re not going to make a habit of it and it’s not going to become this huge, major, thing.

He could’ve made lying, or telling a false truth, as distasteful as eating feces, it could put a bad taste in your mouth. People just wouldn’t do it anymore.

He could’ve made killing someone else, or hurting someone else, hurt you at the same time, you suddenly wouldn’t do it.

But apparently God didn’t have that kind of foresight. He made sin pleasurable in most instances, and then punished people for doing what felt right and felt good.

IF GOD DIDN’T WANT US TO SIN, WHY DID HE MAKE SINNING FEEL GOOD?
